CAIDAS, FAU, and UTN Launch ELLIS Unit Franconia
20.05.2026We are happy to announce that CAIDAS together with FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN), has successfully established the new ELLIS Unit Franconia. With the unit now officially admitted to the European ELLIS network, the partnership strengthens the international visibility of AI research in Franconia.
CAIDAS together with FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN), has successfully established the new ELLIS Unit Franconia. The joint application of the three universities has now been accepted by the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), officially adding Franconia to the European ELLIS network.
ELLIS is one of Europe’s leading networks for research in machine learning and artificial intelligence. The inclusion of ELLIS Unit Franconia highlights the growing international recognition of AI research in Würzburg and the region and creates new opportunities for scientific collaboration, talent development, and joint research initiatives across Europe.
The new unit is a joint effort between CAIDAS, FAU and UTN. By combining complementary expertise in areas such as machine learning, trustworthy AI, data science, and AI applications, the partners aim to further strengthen Franconia as an internationally visible AI research hub.
The ELLIS Society recently announced the admission of seven new units across Europe, including Franconia, further expanding the network’s mission to promote excellence in AI research and foster collaboration between leading European institutions.
