New CAIDAS member: Leon Bungert

01.10.2023

We are pleased to welcome a new member to CAIDAS. Leon Bungert has been appointed to the Professorship for Mathematics of Machine Learning at the Institute of Mathematics as of 1 October 2023.

Leon is an applied mathematician with a passion for the new challenges posed by machine learning methods. He wants to understand how the robustness of neural networks against adversarial attacks is reflected in the geometry of their decision boundaries, the quantitative dependence of learning methods with respect to the number of data points used, and whether swarm methods can replace gradient-based optimization strategies in machine learning.

Leon Bungert studied Mathematics and received his B.Sc. in 2016 and his M.Sc. in 2017, both from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Afterwards, he did his doctoral studies there, and obtained his PhD (summa cum laude) in 2020 with a thesis on “Nonlinear Spectral Analysis with Variational Methods” under the supervision of Martin Burger. After having been a postdoc at the Hausdorff Center of Mathematics in Bonn and a junior research group leader at the Technical University of Berlin, he got a professorship for mathematics at the University of Würzburg in 2023.

We're very much looking forward in working with him and wish a good start at CAIDAS!
