New CAIDAS members: Christof Weiß and Carlo D'Eramo
18.11.2022We are pleased to welcome two new members to CAIDAS. Christof Weiß has been appointed to the Professorship for Computational Humanities and Carlo D'Eramo has been appointed to the Professorship for Reinforcement Learning and Computational Decision Making as of November 2022.
Christof Weiß was born in 1986 in Regensburg. From 2006-2012, he studied physics at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) and composition at Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. His work as a composer encompasses pieces for orchestra, ensemble, and choir as well as chamber music. From 2007-2015, he was a fellow of the Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft (sdw) in the study and the Ph.D. scholarship program.
Starting in 2012, Christof Weiß worked towards his Ph.D. at the Fraunhofer-Institut für Digitale Medientechnologie (IDMT) Ilmenau, supervised by Prof. Karlheinz Brandenburg. From 2015 on, he was a member of the Semantic Audio Processing Group headed by Prof. Meinard Müller at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen, a joint institution of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen IIS. In 2021, he visited the Audio Data Analysis and Signal Processing group at Télécom Paris for a DFG-funded research fellowship.
In his research, Christof Weiß has developed computational methods for analyzing music audio recordings, contributing to research fields such as music information retrieval, computational musicology, audio signal processing, and machine learning. This involves the creation of multimodal datasets and the development of suitable analysis algorithms. Applying such algorithms to large music collections (corpus analysis) indicates the high potential of computational approaches for musicology and the digital humanities, which opens up various possibilities for connections within JMU.

Carlo D'Eramo studied Computer Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (Italy), where he obtained a B.Sc. degree in 2011 and an M.Sc. degree in 2015. He obtained a double degree in Computer Science at University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) in 2015.
Afterwards, he conducted a Ph.D. in Information Technology at Politecnico di Milano (Italy), where he graduated in February 2019 with a thesis "On the exploitation of uncertainty to improve Bellman updates and exploration in Reinforcement Learning". Then, he has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS) group at TU Darmstadt from April 2019 to October 2022. Since April 2022, he is a research group leader of the LiteRL group at hessian.AI.
During several years of research, he gained extensive experience in Reinforcement Learning and provided key methodological advances in several related topics. He has made important and well-recognised contributions to uncertainty quantification and exploitation, multi-task and curriculum learning, skill decomposition, residual learning, and planning. Moreover, he is the developer of MushroomRL, a widely accepted library for simplifying the implementation of Reinforcement Learning experiments.
