High Performance Computing clusters
The Computing Centre of the University of Würzburg operates High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters that provide the computing power for demanding research in artificial intelligence and data science. The current system, Julia 2, was established in 2024 as the successor to Julia 1 from 2017, which has reached the end of its life. Both clusters were funded through DFG major research instrumentation grants, and Julia 2 was designed specifically for the growing demand for accelerator cards in AI research
- The HPC infrastructure comprises the following components:
- 46 compute nodes with 4,512 CPU cores and 28,160 GB of RAM
- 160 accelerator cards: 122 NVIDIA L40, 24 NVIDIA L40s and 16 NVIDIA H100
- 135 TB NVMe and 1.8 PB HDD storage across 28 storage nodes
- Batch operation via the SLURM queuing system
- Virtual machines provided via a private-cloud approach
- Predecessor Julia 1: 52 compute nodes, GPU and FAT nodes, 500 TB storage
Human-AI Test Center
The Human-AI Test Center brings together CAIDAS's research and transfer infrastructure for designing, testing and evaluating artificial, intelligent and interactive systems. Its central question is how AI affects human cognition, emotion, behaviour and social life – and how systems should be built so that they truly support people. The centre is open to researchers, students and partners from industry, public administration and society.
-
The AI Research Center encompasses the following topics:
-
Subjective and objective measurement of AI skills with scientific validated tests
-
Interactive and gamified trainings improving AI skills
-
Paradigms and ethical frameworks for investigating Human-AI Interaction (e.g., simulations with technical overlays, videos-simulations, XR-simulations)
-
AI-companions at workplaces and in games
-
AI-driven therapies, interventions, and prevention measures
-
AI-Technology impact with regard to ethical, legal, and social aspects, as well as psychological states, user experience, and usability
